Loosely based on Ciudad, a graphic novel written by Ande Parks in conjunction with Joe and Anthony Russo that features art by Fernando León González and Eric Skillman, Netflix’s Extraction tells the story of Tyler Rake, a former SAS operator turned elite soldier of fortune. After a drug lord’s son is kidnapped, Rake is tasked with rescuing him, but the mission falls apart after he is confronted with treachery along the way. Extraction was a major success for Netflix, becoming the streamer’s biggest ever movie premiere at the time.

At Netflix’s TUDUM global fan event, the honor of introducing the preview for Extraction 2 fell to leading man Hemsworth, who remarked on the blood, sweat, and tears that had already gone into working on the upcoming movie. The preview starts with a monologue by Hemsworth, setting up the plot for the action-packed sequel. The first look eventually gives way to another crew member describing some of the ambitious sequences and single-take shots that Extraction 2 will deliver under the direction of Sam Hargrave, who is also working on a Christmas-themed action movie with Idris Elba.

The visuals were the show’s real star, with a showcase of BTS shots on set. Viewers were shown everything from handsome leading man Hemsworth in many diverse and interesting environments to impressive practical effects like explosions and crashes, and even an authentic shot of a helicopter landing on a moving train. Extraction 2 looks to deliver double the action, as the preview explicitly promises, leaving little wonder why the film franchise seems perfect for a video game adaptation.

Despite some criticism surrounding the screenplay taking a backseat to the action on screen, the reception from the viewing audience has truly galvanized Netflix to throw some weight behind Extraction 2, as fans saw when the sequel was immediately snapped up following the release of the original. With the Russo Brothers interested in making an Extraction cinematic universe out of the successful project, it’s likely that Extraction 2 won’t be the last fans see of the action-packed exploits of Tyler Rake.

Fans are likely also hopeful that the sequel project is subject to less turmoil backstage, as the first movie experienced issues ranging from multiple name alterations during production to the ending of Extraction being changed despite the director’s personal misgivings about the new ending. Either way, the chance to see how the story continues in this sequel will surely draw a huge audience.

Extraction 2 will be released for streaming on Netflix in 2023.
