The original Dead Space was released in 2008 to critical acclaim, with critics praising its gameplay and lore and one review even comparing it favorably to Resident Evil 4. Dead Space 2 earned similar praise and was a much bigger financial success. However, the franchise has been effectively dead since Dead Space 3’s underperforming launch in 2013, with EA shuttering Visceral Games in 2017.

Developers announced the Dead Space reboot’s upcoming extended gameplay reveal over Twitter earlier today. It’s scheduled to begin at 8 AM Pacific/11 AM Eastern on October 14. Players can tune in by visiting Dead Space’s official YouTube channel or developer Motive Studio on Twitch. Fans can find links to the stream in the tweet, though Motive Studio warns that the livestream may not be suitable for all audiences. Given the franchise in question, that probably should not be surprising.
Motive announced the stream as a celebration of Dead Space’s 14th anniversary, though it technically takes place the day after. It will also be the fans’ first look at the reboot’s uninterrupted gameplay. Developers revealed the Dead Space gameplay trailer on October 4, though it was heavily edited and contained a lot of cinematic content. Nevertheless, it still teased a lot of action, including Dead Space’s iconically graphic dismemberment-based combat and memorable zero gravity set-pieces. Still, many fans will no doubt be excited to see a more significant stretch of uninterrupted Dead Space gameplay.
Fan reactions were overwhelmingly positive on Twitter, with fans expressing their excitement for the upcoming remake through comments and memes. A minority of replies voiced skepticism about whether the Dead Space remake is worth its expected $70 price tag, with one suggesting that EA should offer a discount to players who own the original game. However, the overwhelming majority of Twitter replies were unambiguously positive.
Notably, Dead Space has a serious competitor this time around in the form of The Callisto Protocol. Developed by Striking Distance Studios and published by Krafton, The Callisto Protocol is helmed by Dead Space co-creator Glen Schofield, and developers clearly position it as a spiritual successor to the Dead Space trilogy. And since the games aren’t far apart on next year’s release schedule, many will be eager to see how the two games stack up, especially if EA and Krafton use these games to springboard their respective franchises.
Dead Space launches on January 27 for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S.
