There are a set of cards in Magic: The Gathering that make up what’s known as the reserved list. These are cards from Magic’s earliest days that developer, Wizards of The Coast, has stated it will never reprint. Powerful cards on the reserved list are worth a lot of money, because they’re the only copies that will ever exist.

Included on the reserved list is a set of lands that tap for two colors, known as dual lands. These lands are incredibly powerful, because every other land that taps for two colors has some kind of drawback attached. These lands aren’t just perfect for land based commanders, they fit into every deck that is made up of cards of more than one color. These dual lands are incredibly sought after, and can go for tens of thousands of dollars each.
This is why Reddit users reacted with horror when one user posted a photo of a deck box that his friend had created. The box was created using one of each of the five dual lands, all now in horrible shape after being folded and tossed around. If the lands were in good condition, they’d be worth over $1000 combined. But in their current condition they’re worth about as much as the squirrel basic lands, which is to say practically nothing.
The user who posted the photo had a more blasé attitude, describing the homemade box as the “ultimate flex.” However one could argue that the true ultimate flex would be a box made up of Black Lotus, a Magic card that recently sold at auction for $166K. But until somebody makes that, this box will probably hold the mantle for the most expensive DIY Magic project ever.
